Kappa "River Child" Highly intelligent and unpredictable, the Kappa is either a benevolent boon to local agriculture and friend to lonely children, or a man-eating, gas-passing, sumo-wrestling menace. If face-to-face with a Kappa, the best course of action is to take a very deep bow - being an honorable creature, it will be obliged to return your gesture. This motion will cause the water to pour out of the concave dish on its head, rendering the Kappa immobile. Once bested, a Kappa will offer its lifelong loyalty and friendship.
Rokurokubi - "Pulley Neck" This yokai is unique, living as an ordinary woman during the day. By night time, her head extends far beyond her body, often leaving it behind to cause mischief and drink lamp oil. A woman often is cursed to become a Rokurokubi, as punishment for her (or her husband's) sins. In other instances, the long neck is a medical affliction caused by a "loose heart."
Kyuuso - "Old Rat" "Rodents of unusual size? I don't believe they exist." - famous last words before being attacked by an ROUS (1987) On a rat's thousandth birthday, it will grow to enormous size - often subverting its role as prey by hunting cats and other predators. Its name is a pun on the phrase "kyuuso neko wo kamu" (a cornered rat will bite a cat).
Tsukumogami - "tool spirit" This name applies to any household object that has gained sentience, often by reaching its hundredth birthday. This fact, of course, implies that any existing tsukumogami would be an antique. Modern instances could be anything as recent as a 1920s telephone, radio, camera, etc. If not for today's major tech corporations use of "planned obsolescence," the future may be overrun with mischievous smartphones!
